Canada is the most favorable country to immigrate to according to various rankings. Reasons for which include a better standard of living, better health care, and a booming economy to name a few.

The most popular program to immigrate to Canada for permanent residency is the Express Entry program. You can check the Come to Canada tool which helps in understanding whether you can apply for permanent residency. This tool is provided by the CIC(Canadian Immigration and Citizenship). It helps you figure out which program works best for immigration to Canada.

The main programs within Express Entry along with their individual requirements are as follows:

  • Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)
  • Federal Skilled Trades (FST)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

CEC

To qualify for CEC, you must clear the below conditions:

  • Have below minimum language test results according to NOC(National Occupancy Code):
    1. CLB(Canadian Language Benchmark) 7 for NOC skill level 0 or A jobs or
    2. CLB 5 for NOC skill level B jobs
  • Have a minimum of one year of work experience in NOC skill type 0, A or BN in Canada within the last 3 years.  The work experience must be:
    1. Full time (at least 30h/week) or
    2. An equal amount in part-time (at least 15h/week)
  • Have gained your work experience legally in Canada, i.e. while on a work permit.
  • Have no plans to live in Quebec

Example: Jill is a Business Analyst working as a Business Analyst for 2 years at a major bank in Canada. She may be eligible to apply for PR within Express Entry through the Canadian Experience Class(CEC) program provided she is able to satisfy all the prerequisites required for the program.

FSW 

To qualify for FSW, you must clear the below conditions:

  • Have worked within the NOC codes 0, A or B
  • Have worked for at least 1 continuous year
    1. Full time (at least 30h/week) or
    2. An equal amount in part-time (at least 15h/week)
  • Have a minimum of CLB 7 in all 4 abilities – writing, reading. Listening and speaking
  • Have no plans to live in Quebec

Example: Joe is working full time as a Project Manager for 6 years in an IT company in India. He may be eligible to apply for PR within Express Entry through the Federal Skilled Worker program provided he can attain a good score in IELTS and can clear all the prerequisites. 

FST

To qualify for FSW, you must clear the below conditions:

  • Plan to live outside Quebec
  • Have minimum language test results as below:
    1. CLB5 for listening and speaking
    2. CLB4 for writing and reading
  • Have experience in a skilled trade of at least 2 years in the last 5 years 
    1. full-time (30 h/week, or an 
    2. AN equal amount in part-time (at least 15h/week)
  • Skill Trade experience match essential duties as mentioned in the NOC code
  • Have one of the below:
    1. Valid job offers of full-time employment for a period of 1 year
    2. Certificate of qualification 
  • Have NOC code from the below list:
    1. Major Group 72, industrial, electrical, and construction trades
    2. Major Group 73, maintenance and equipment operation trades
    3. Major Group 82, supervisors and technical jobs in natural resources, agriculture, and related production
    4. Major Group 92, processing, manufacturing, and utility supervisors and central control operators
    5. Minor Group 632, chefs and cooks
    6. Minor Group 633, butchers and baker

Example: Matt is an Electrician working as a contractor for 2 years in Canada. He owns his own business and has also completed the trade certification for construction electricians. He may be eligible to apply for PR within Express Entry through the Federal Skilled Trades program provided he is able to clear all the other prerequisites.
